BIO 101 - lecture 7 + 8 my notes (messy sry) photosynthesis - happens in chloroplast. 6CO2 + 6H2O -> glucose + 6O2 (need light) two stages!! light rxns + calvin cycle (dark rxns but not really dark lol prof said misnomer) light rxns = thylakoid membrane. makes ATP and NADPH. splits water (photolysis) -> O2 byproduct. chlorophyll absorbs light mostly red+blue reflects green thats y plants green calvin cycle - stroma. uses the ATP+NADPH from light rxns to fix CO2 into sugar. RuBisCO enzyme = most abundant protein on earth apparently. 3 turns = 1 G3P, 2 G3P make glucose cellular respiration - opposite basically. glucose + O2 -> CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy!) 3 stages: glycolysis (cytoplasm, glucose->2 pyruvate, small ATP), krebs cycle (mitochondria matrix, makes NADH FADH2 CO2), electron transport chain (inner mito membrane, makes MOST of the ATP ~34, uses O2 as final e- acceptor) glycolysis doesnt need O2 - anaerobic. fermentation if no O2 (lactic acid in muscles, alcohol in yeast) ATP = energy currency. adenosine triphosphate. break phosphate bond = energy mitochondria = powerhouse of cell (she actually said it) EXAM: know the equations, where each stage happens, inputs/outputs, why O2 matters diff between the two processes - photosynth STORES energy, respiration RELEASES it
